This is it. D-Day. We have been there before in 2003. We have experienced the pain of being on the other side. This is can easily pass of as script of a fairy tale. Sachin Tendulkar on 99 centuries, playing in World Cup Final, in front of his hometown, Mumbai.
I remember in 1996 after we won the extremely charged up game against Pakistan at Bengaluru. Entire nation assumed we have already won the cup and Sri Lanka humiliated us. Lets hold our celebration for few hours. It aint over till its over. That 1996 match at Eden Gardens is still etched into memory, and it is time to bury those ghosts.Just like before we have been quite dependent on Sachin in this World Cup too. Of all the people in the world, Sachin would know not to think ahead of time. This showed when in semi final against Pakistan, after they lost 9 wickets Sachin was shouting to everyone on the field "Match abhi khatam nahi hua hai !" . This is level of concentration, dedication the man has. This is why he is at the top for 20 years. I love him more than any other sports person out there.
As for Sri Lanka, their run into the finals has been easier compared to us. Sri Lanka lost the game against Pakistan, match against Australia was washed off and they met fairly easy opponents in quarters and semis. Of course if any team is the final, it deserve to be there. Sri Lanka have very bad record of playing in India though. I hope it continues. Sri Lankan top order has not collapsed in this World cup and they will be tested now. This is going to be nerve breaking for Sri Lanka with 35,000 fans cheering their home team, and billion world wide.
As for us, run to the final has been quite nerve breaking. Close encounter with England, South Africa. Intense quarter and semi against Australia and Pakistan. We have knocked out the 3 times defending champions and the bitter rivals Pakistan. We are clearly favourites to lift the cup and rightly so. Sachin is just 3 runs behind Dilshan in contest for highest runs scored in this world cup. 100th ton awaits for the Master Blaster. For those who open their cake-holes without thinking to say "We lose when Sachin scores a century", shut the fuck up. Man has scored 48 ODI centuries and we have lost only 13 times. We all know that 100th ton is just around the corner, and he himself would not care if we win the cup and he never reaches there.
Just for once, I am praying Gambhir doesn't try to throw his wicket in crucial position. Come to think of it again, I wish there be a situation where Gambhir won't even have to come to bat :-). Just for once I hope Dilshan plays a stupid shot and Sehwag doesn't. Just for once I am praying, and so is the entire nation. We have experienced the pain of losing in final before. Not this time. Let this be our night, our celebration. Tonight, the entire nation holds its breath. History beckons, and we are marching towards it.
